On Becoming A Disciple of Christ

The ultimate joy of learning to think theologically about the world, the cosmos, is recognizing that the Triune God of creation, in whom we exist and find our being, broke into time, entered the world stage to redeem His creation from sin and the curse of death. God gave his Son Jesus as the ultimate sacrifice for human sin, that whoever believes in Him, will not perish in everlasting death, but have eternal life (John 3:16). Jesus said that "I am the Bread of Life, whoever eats this bread will never die. Our Lord also said that "I am the way, the truth and the life, no man comes to the Father but by me".

If you believe this, I invite you to say this prayer:

Jesus, I thank you for dying on a cruel cross, that my sins might be

forgiven. I confess to you that I am a sinner in need of your forgiveness

and grace. Please come into my heart and dwell in me forever. Help

me to love you with all of my heart, soul, mind and strength. Amen

How to Grow In Your Faith

As a Christian, there are 3 disciplines you must develop to be strong in your faith:

  • Establish the habit of a  "daily quiet time" of prayer and meditation in the God's word, the Bible. Thomas Aquinas, a great medieval theologian of the Church, described such discipline as "habitus". Psalm 1 promises that if we meditate in the book of the law (the Bible), day and night, we will be like trees planted by streams of living water, bearing our fruit in due season. Daily quiet times can be as short as 20-30 minutes a day. It is an important time of intimate communion with our Lord. Martin Luther, the father of the Protestant Reformation said that when we pray, we talk to God; when we read the Bible, God talks to us.
  • Commit to loving the Lord your God with all of your heart, soul, mind and strength. This is the language of the Jewish Shema from Deuteronomy 6:5, where Moses commanded the Hebrew people to be wholly devoted to God. This is a journey of love and obedience to the Lord's commands. The Lord desires  our full devotion to him.
  • Find a good Christian church where you can grow under the direction of a Pastor and be strengthened in a community of believers. No man is an island-we need each other in the body of Christ to grow and to flourish in the faith.
